Laser Hair Removal Explained
Laser hair removal (epilation) is a medical procedure that uses a beam of laser light to target the brown pigment called melanin in each hair follicle. The laser energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle, which is destroyed as a result, while damage to the surrounding skin is minimized. Laser hair removal is a quick, cost-effective way to rid yourself of unwanted hair in areas such as:

In the past, lasers only worked on light-skinned individuals with dark hair. Modern laser science now allows us to treat a much wider range of skin tones and hair colors. At Dundee Dermatology we also have lasers with longer wavelengths that allow us to treat even very dark skin types.
The Treatment
Before considering treatment, your specialist will review your medical history and assess your options for hair removal. Our Chicago area patients are advised to prepare properly for their treatments. Once your laser hair treatment has been scheduled, you should avoid tanning and using sunless tanning lotions, must use sunscreen 30 SPF or higher when outdoors, and should not pluck, wax, or have electrolysis performed (though you may shave 1 to 2 days before treatment – not on the treatment day).
A topical anesthetic may be used to make your laser hair removal treatment comfortable. In addition, our lasers have built in cooling that automatically cool the skin moments before the laser pulse. This provides greater comfort.
Hair in active growth can be most effectively treated by the laser. Hair grows in cycles, meaning that some hairs in a treatment area may not be in an "active" growth mode when initially treated. As a result, a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart is required to achieve maximum hair reduction.
